“In the lives of most members, the Country Club of Detroit holds a special place. In a setting of inordinate beauty, it has the ability to brighten one’s spirit on a glorious fall day or urge one to outdoor activity when the flowers first appear in spring. But the majestic building and its expansive grounds are only the housing for something more important: the fellowship of friends who congregate here.
“Certainly, throughout its history the Club has been a center for sports activities, entertainment and good food. But those elements are secondary to the collegiality of a regular foursome or a special gathering of family and friends with something to celebrate. The Club is a community in the richest sense of the word. People congratulate friends’ successes, share in their sorrows, mark the passage of their milestones and watch as their children and grandchildren grow to adulthood.
“In examining the Club’s history, we can see familiar patterns and connections. Although changes have occurred, in many ways the Club is as it was. There has always been a quiet dignity to proceedings here. Gaiety exists, of course, and frivolity too, particularly among the children who so enliven the Club life. But nothing so distinguishes the members as their respect for tradition; that has been true since the Club’s founding. It is comforting to know that while physical surroundings may be modernized, the traditional nature of the Club has been kept on a true course.”
